Background on diabetes
Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects the lives of more than 4 million Filipinos. It is a disease wherein one has high blood sugar, either because there is not enough insulin produced, or because cells do not respond to the insulin that is produced.
Diabetes has often been diagnosed with other comorbid conditions such as coronary artery and peripheral vascular disease, stroke, diabetic neuropathy, amputations, renal failure and blindness. This leads to increased disability, reduced life expectancy and enormous health costs. Diabetes may also cause other diseases such as: Cardiovascular Diseases, Eye Complications, Kidney Disease (Nephropathy), Nerve Damage (Neuropathy), High Blood Pressure (Hypertension), and Skin Complications
